TEXT: EZEKIEL 16:35-43.
🔑KEY VERSE “Because thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, but hast fretted me in all these things; behold, therefore I also will recompense thy way upon thine head, saith the Lord GOD: and thou shalt not commit this lewdness above all thine abominations (EZEKIEL 16:43).

One of the most remarkable things about God is that He loves with the same fervour with which He judges. He has no preferences or favourites. God is no respecter of persons, no matter how highly placed or well favoured. When He sees sin either in a heathen or in a backslidden Christian, He punishes it equally.

Our text was a solemn message delivered by prophet Ezekiel to Jerusalem. God had taken Jerusalem as a bride (Isaiah 54:5) but she went into adultery with strangers. She gave gifts to her lovers and hired them for whoredom. She used the blood of her children for idolatry and abominations. Therefore, the Lord decided to judge her as women that break wedlock are judged. She received the recompense for her whoredom and abominations with burning fire and God’s fury.

It is indeed a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God who is a consuming fire. He will judge sin wherever it is found; whether in the unbelieving heathens or in the compromising and backslidden believers. In fact, when a believer, espoused to God like Jerusalem, wilfully goes into sin, he incurs greater wrath than those who do not know God.

Some people erroneously think that God is slack in bringing punishment on evil doers. He is only long-suffering and patient, “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” A day of recompense will come upon the world as it was for Jerusalem. We do not need to wait until the cup of evil, corruption and sin gets full and the judgement of God becomes unavoidable. It is beneficial if you would avoid God’s impending wrath, repent from sin and totally separate from all ungodly conducts.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God’s recompense will not be pleasant to sinners.

Nobody eats his cake and have it

  1. The usual result of backsliding
    a. Their sin is a case of backsliding from initial total devotion to God v36.
    b. They became “servants of corruption”, overcome by corruption, brought back into bondage and got entangled in the pollutions of the world v35,
    2 Peter 2:19-22.
Lord, I pray for power and grace that will never go back to my vomit again
    c. Observe that Satan made sure they were worse off morally than even gentile sinners around them through unimaginable wickedness v36.
    d. This agrees with 2 Peter 2:19-22 that the devil will not leave backsliders until he makes them worse than what they were before conversion.
Lord, I pray that I will never loose my position of dominion over sin and Satan
  2. The usual inescapable divine anger on backsliding
    a. Open shame before unbelievers v37. Unfortunately, Satan often make backsliders to loose their sense of shame.
    b. At times, children or close relations of the backsliders loose their lives v38. Like Judah who shed the blood of their children for idols, a backslider at times do not value the life of close relations through satanic blindness and hardening of hearts.
    c. Public disgrace and disappointments v39.
    d. Loss and destruction of things that they count precious vv40,41.
    e. Observe that the purpose of the severe judgement is to bring a totally lost soul to a sincere reflection, reversal, repentance and restoration vv41b, 43b. Read also Ezekiel 18:32.
  3. The usual constant reflections needed
    a. To avoid backsliding, often reflect on the wretchedness, wickedness, woes, wastes, wailings and weariness with worldliness etc that made you run to Christ v43.
    b. Never forget the great change the day you had a personal encounter with Christ v43.
    c. Never forget other blessings that you have received through godliness v43.
    d. Backsliding and going back to the world is never an option John 16:33. “My grace is sufficient for you”. “We are not of them that goes back to perdition.”
Reconsecrate your life afresh to Christ that you will follow Him to the end
Pray for backsliders and those considering backsliding among members and ministers in the church that God will visit, revive and restore them

HYMN Oh what a wonderful day

  1. Oh What A Wonderful Wonderful Day
    Day I Will Never Forget
After I’d Wandered In Darkness Away
    Jesus My Savior I Met
Oh What A Tender Compassionate Friend
He Met The Need Of My Heart
Shadows Dispelling With Joy I Am Telling
He Made All The Darkness Depart
Heaven Came Down And Glory Filled My Soul
When At The Cross The Savior Made Me Whole
    My Sins Were Washed Away
And My Night Was Turned To Day
Heaven Came Down And Glory Filled My Soul.
  2. Born Of The Spirit With Life From Above
    Into God’s Fam’ly Divine
    Justified Fully Thru Calvary’s Love
Oh What A Standing Is Mine
And The Transaction So Quickly Was Made
When As A Sinner I Came
Took Of The Offer Of Grace
He Did Proffer He Saved Me
    Oh Praise His Dear Name
  3. Now I’ve A Hope That Will Surely Endure
    After The Passing Of Time
I Have A Future In Heaven For Sure
    There In Those Mansions Sublime
And It’s Because Of That Wonderful Day
When At The Cross I Believed
    Riches Eternal And Blessings Supernal
From His Precious Hand I Received.
