TEXT: ISAIAH 9:8-21.
🔑KEY VERSE “The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars” (ISAIAH 9:10).

Many who cry to God asking for riches and promotion do not appear to be ready for the price needed to retain the wealth while simultaneously maintaining a “meek and quiet spirit.” They do not understand that prosperous times are trial times. Will you have more or less time to serve God when riches arrive? Will your newly-found wealth replace the Lord as your new love, such that the zeal for His work will take second place as long as you are able to give the church what it needs for its building projects? Will arrogance set in?

The people of the northern kingdom of Israel ran into such a challenge that became their undoing. They exhibited “pride and stoutness of heart.” They felt they did not need God. From their narrow point of view, they were self-sufficient.

But to the Lord would not overlook iniquity not sincerely repented of. He pronounced punishment that would come through military attacks from Israel’s traditional enemies, Syria and the Philistines. The wickedness of Israel was widespread and God’s fury ravaged the land as the logical consequences of the people’s transgressions. He kept on reminding them that “his anger is not turned away, but his hand (of judgement) is stretched out still.”

Has God withdrawn His hand of judgement over the sinful across the world? No; because in Isaiah 13:11, He repeats what He has always told the world: “…I will punish the world of the evil, and the wicked of their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the hautiness of the terrible.” The only way to escape this inevitable and fast approaching days of the outpouring of the Lord’s wrath is to confess and forsake sin, and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Saviour, and settle for humility and righteousness.

✍THOUGHT FOR THE DAY Prosperous days are tricky times.

The price of taking God for granted

  1. They belittled the first stage of God’s judgement as something they could cope with and turn around for good. No repentance yet vv9,10.
Q Do you have the fear of God or you have the tendency to despise God’s judgement?
Lord, teach me your fear that will never take your judgement for granted
  2. The next level of God’s judgement involved decimation of their military might by the adversaries vv11,12. No repentance still.
Q Do you have a situation where your country’s military might is being threatened by foreign forces?
Lord, let not your mercy depart from this nation. Make her strong against all internal and external adversaries
  3. The next level of judgement was directed at the rulers, both spiritual and secular. They were expected to call their subjects to repentance and they failed in this vv13-16.
Lord, pass through the rulership of this country at all levels and give them revival of the fear of the Lord and love to truly serve
  4. The next level of judgement was directed at the vulnerable in the land for their hypocrisy and evil doing. They refused to disapprove the evils of their leaders vv17.
  5. The final level of judgement was severe famine and wanton destruction of their land which eventually led to being sold into captivity vv18-21.
Confess the sins of the rulers, both secular and spiritual, in this nation and ask God to release the Spirit of repentance on the rulers and the whole nation
God, deliver our nation from all forms of captivities of sin, wicked people and selfish rulers

HYMN Are you washed in the blood

  1. Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you washed in the blood,
In the soul cleansing blood of the Lamb?
    Are your garments spotless?
    Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
2 Are you walking daily by the Savior’s side?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Do you rest each moment in the Crucified?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?[Chorus]
3 When the Bridegroom cometh will your robes be white?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Will your soul be ready for the mansions bright,
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb?[Chorus]
4 Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin,
    And be washed in the blood of the Lamb;
There’s a fountain flowing for the soul unclean,
O be washed in the blood of the Lamb![Chorus]
