NO GREATER SIGN

TEXT: LUKE 11:29-36
And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet” (LUKE 11:29)
We live in an age where believing is subject to seeing. Except people are able to lay hold to tangible evidence, it is difficult to accept and believe the truth. This strong drive for signs is what has given rise to many false signs and miracle workers in many assemblies today. People look at these and become so captivated that they do not bother to look at the source of such miracles, the lives of the miracle workers, and the doctrines they teach.
The Jews in Jesus’ days were sign seekers too. In our passage today, Jesus was clear in His response to their obvious demand for a sign from Him to prove that He was the Messiah. He told them He was not going to give any other sign other than the one provided in the Scriptures about the story of Jonah. Jonah’s miraculous deliverance from the fish’s belly after three days was both a symbolic and prophetic pointer to Jesus’ resurrection from the grave after three days.
Today, the empty tomb of Jesus, which is the infallible proof of His resurrection, remains one indisputable sign that shows that He is the Saviour of the world. The world has had several signs and miracle workers today who claim to be great prophets, saviours and gods, but whose graves are all around us. However, only One person – Jesus Christ – is the Saviour of the world.
As we evangelise, let our emphasis be on Jesus, the risen Lord.
While working miracles, signs and wonders are good, they can be counterfeited. But there is no counterfeit to the fact of Christ’s resurrection. And faith in Him is the basis for every other miracle the world can ever desire.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: His empty tomb is the sign the world needs!
