TEXT: PSALM 115:1-11.
KEY VERSE “Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he is their help and their shield” (PSALM 115:11).

One of the stories from Kathryn Kuhlman’s book, I believe in Miracles, tells the story of a couple, Charles and Given Woods whose elder daughter, thirteen-year-old Cheryl suffered greatly from epileptic seizures which kept on aggravating. Doctors had all done all they could without any clue. The girl, brilliant and athletic, fell in school in one of the games which gradually developed into a nightmare for the family that the mother wished she would die to end her excruciating sufferings. But while attending Kuhlman’s revival service, the father heard a voice saying, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee…” To the glory of God, during their second visit, the young girl was completely healed.

Our text can be summarised under three main ideas. One, all glory must be given to God alone for His mercies as He remains the sovereign God (verses 1-3); two, the idols of the heathen are lifeless and useless (verses 4-8); three, we are to trust in God because in Him lies our help (verses 9-11).

Without God, man is hopeless and helpless.

He is our present help in trouble. Think of Abraham who lived in a strange land, prospered, became old and eventually went to heaven. David fought many battles and never lost any. Paul the apostle traveled to diverse nations to preach the gospel and he established many churches. God helped them all.

Our help comes from God who neither sleeps nor slumbers. He shall preserve us from all evil as we trust Him. Unfortunately, many still think their wealth, position and education can save them. Those things cannot, and will not save. We must keep on trusting Him because His thoughts towards us are thoughts of peace – to give us an expected end. We should always trust God to “Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.”

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Earthly help is short-lived but God’s is peaceful and long-lasting.

MEDITATION

The only reasonable Personality to trust

  1. You will always inherit the limitations of the person or things you are trusting v8.
    a. What are the limitations of the idols some put their trust in? vv5-7.
    b. Those limitations are always transfered to those trusting them v8.
    c. For example, those who put their trust in “works of men’s hand” (e.g. money) will be enslaved by men v4. Those who put confidence in “eyes have they, but they see not” will be spiritually blind v5. He will not see when evil is coming; he will not see the glory of God etc.
    Q Check other limitations of people or things that others trust and meditate on how their limitations are spiritually transfered vv5-7.
    Q Who or what are you putting your confidence on? What are their limitations?
  2. The Lord our help and shield
    Shields are used to intercept specific attacks, whether from close-ranged weaponry or projectiles such as arrows, by means of active blocks.
    Q If God is your shield, whom/what should you be afraid of then? vv9,10.
    If God is your help, then all His attributes will be transfered to you.
    Q What are the attributes of God you want imparted to your life now?
    Lord, I give you all glory and worship because you alone will be my trust and confidence
    Ask for the transfer of any attribute of God that is lacking in your life(e.g. unwavering faith, victory of activities of the wicked Isaiah 40:28-31).
    Lord, I am clinging to You alone as my Help and Shield. Manifest yourself in my situations
    Lord, let your help and protection from all evils be real in the life of all your children in a time like these

HYMN My faith looks up to Thee

  1. My faith looks up to Thee,
    Thou Lamb of Calvary,
    Savior Divine;
    Now hear me while I pray;
    Take all my guilt away;
    Oh, let me from this day
    Be wholly Thine.
    2
    May Thy rich grace impart
    Strength to my fainting heart,
    My zeal inspire;
    As Thou hast died for me,
    Oh, may my love to Thee
    Pure, warm, and changeless be,
    A living fire.
    3
    While life’s dark maze I tread,
    And griefs around me spread,
    Be Thou my Guide;
    Bid darkness turn to day,
    Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
    Nor let me ever stray
    From Thee aside.
    4
    All thru life’s transient dream,
    Until death’s sullen stream
    Shall o’er me roll,
    Blest Savior, with Thy love,
    Fear and distrust remove;
    Make me Thy grace to prove
    Transform my soul
