THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD

TEXT: ISAIAH 40:12-20.
🔑KEY VERSE “To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?” (ISAIAH 40:18).

God’s influence is overwhelming and can be perceived everywhere. A songwriter, after a cursory look at the creation, was left with no choice than to chant, “How great thou art.”

Prophet Isaiah tries to put in perspective and in a language that can be easily understood, how powerful God is. His ability to forgive sin can also be discerned from here. The prophet says that the nations were as nothing before Him, not merely because of His immensity but because of their insufficiency to make any atonement by their oblations for the iniquities which they had committed.

He describes the foolishness of idolatry and how what they practice makes a lot of demand on the practitioners above their abilities and capacity. “He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot; he seeketh unto him a cunning worksman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved” (verse 20).

Yet, God does not make such a demand on His worshippers. In looking at His plan for our salvation and the eventual coming of Christ to atone for our sins, we have every reason to be grateful to God, serve him and entrust our whole being to Him.

In view of the great power of God and the incomprehensibility of His might, those who refuse to follow and worship Him are revelling in His long-suffering; but if they fail to repent, they will regret when He comes in His fury upon all children of disobedience. To avoid this fate, submit yourself to His omnipotence, repent of all known sin and ensure you serve Him unreservedly.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY God’s mercy is great towards all who serve Him.

BIBLE IN A YEAR: ACTS 9-10.

MEDITATION

The incomparable God

It is good to take time and meditate on Who God is.

  1. His stature: Omnipotence
    a. All the waters in the sea and oceans can be put in the hollow of His hand v12.
    b. He hand is long enough to measure the universe v12. How long is His hand?
    c. He is strong enough to carry all the mountains and put them on a weighing balance alone v12.
    Q Who is strong enough and not fear or dread God?
  2. His sense knowledge: omniscience
    a. Has more knowledge than all the geniuses of all ages combined together v13,14.
    b. His understanding is greater than that of all the wise men of all ages and disciplines put together v13,14.
    Q Who then has the right to question, modify, or correct His demands, laws and word?
  3. His seeing power: Omnipresence
    a. All the nations are as a drop of water in a bucket vv15,17. The whole universe is infinitesimally small to Him.
    b. Individuals, including you, are like specks vv15,16.
    Q Is there anyone He cannot see through and through? The hairs of all humans beings are counted by Him Matthew 10:30.
    Q Who can hide his/her thoughts, actions, plans and motives from Him?
    Praise God for His omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence
    Bow your heart to Him in compete surrender and promise to obey and fear Him
    Ask for more of His revelations by the Holy Spirit
    Ask Him to show forth His might over COVID-19 and over all other challenges you can mention

HYMN To God be the glory

  1. To God be the glory, great things He hath done,
    So loved He the world that He gave us His Son,
    Who yielded His life our redemption to win,
    And opened the life-gate that all may go in.
    Chorus
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the earth hear His voice;
    Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
    Let the people rejoice;
    Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
    And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.
    2
    Oh, perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
    To every believer the promise of God;
    The vilest offender who truly believes,
    That moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
    3
    Great things He hath taught us, great things He hath done,
    And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
    But purer, and higher, and greater will be
    Our wonder, our transport when Jesus we see.
