Topic: Death For Disobedience
Text: Deuteronomy 21:18-23 (KJV)
18 If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:
19 Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place;
20 And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.
21 And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
22 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree:
23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Death penalty for heinous crimes is being practised by over 51% of the countries of the world today. According to Amnesty International, over 1000 people were executed in China in 2016, 567 in Iran, 154 in Saudi Arabia, 88 in Iraq, 87 in Pakistan, 44 in Egypt and 20 in the USA.
Under the law of Moses, a son who was rebellious to the parents after all efforts to reform him had failed was to be brought to the judges and elders of the city and he would be stoned to death. The text also talks about someone who had “committed a sin worthy of death”. Such should be hanged. He must be buried that day because “he that is hanged is accursed” (verse 23).
Youth rebellion and disobedience form a major headache both for parents and communities across the globe today. Churches, governments and communities are frantically doing all they can to stem youth restiveness and criminality. Many crimes like drug abuse, cultism, pornography, armed robbery, quest for materialism, immorality, etc., are very rampant among the youths of today. In countries like the United States, one hears of shootings and killings even in schools.
Exposure to the internet has done a lot of havoc to the youth who have access to all manner of corrupting materials and information. What is the solution to all these? Christ. Receiving Christ as Lord and Saviour will help them to think soberly, resting on the grace of God.
Governments on their part must do all they can to provide jobs for the youths to enable them occupy their time usefully. The Church must help them through prayers and godly programmes to enable them become useful adults of tomorrow. A country with godless youths is a ruined one.
